As part of the Secondary School UI Design Competition & Job Shadowing Program co-organized by AlipayHK and SEED Foundation, we recently hosted an immersive half-day UI design workshop — a unique opportunity for secondary school students to explore the world of user interface design.
In the session, professional designers from AlipayHK shared how they ensure the app remains intuitive and user-friendly — even as it evolves to offer a growing range of features, from payments to lifestyle services and personal finance. A great reminder that thoughtful design scales with complexity. Following this, SEED Foundation’s experienced UX/UI instructor introduced the fundamentals of UI design while fostering an open, interactive space where students were engaged through interactive Q&A sessions. During the workshop, students got hands-on with Figma, diving into color theory, user flow, and real-world UI examples like the AlipayHK app to understand what makes a great user interface truly work. What truly stood out was the students’ energy and engagement. Despite the short timeframe, they showed exceptional curiosity and a genuine desire to learn.
At SEED, we believe in providing equal access to digital learning opportunities and not just for tech students or those with prior experience, but for everyone, regardless of background. That’s why this workshop was specially designed to be beginner-friendly. Many participants had never used a design tool before, but by the end of the session, they were already prototyping, experimenting, and thinking like real product designers.
We look forward to seeing how these aspiring designers apply their new skills in the competition and beyond.
