A recent South China Morning Post article highlights the rapid transformation of the finance job landscape due to AI and automation. Three-quarters of Hong Kong banks had already integrated AI into their operations, up from 59 per cent in 2022. Routine entry-level roles are shrinking as finance tasks traditionally involving number crunching become automated. However, career progression accelerates for those possessing digital literacy, data analytics, and adaptive soft skills, which are increasingly in demand and not traditionally associated with finance education.

The Financial Services Skills Commission (FSSC) recently released a comprehensive Future Skills Framework outlining the essential capabilities professionals must develop to thrive in tomorrow’s financial ecosystem. This may seem surprising, but it reflects the realities of today’s digital economy: the framework places relatively little emphasis on traditional finance skills. Instead, it prioritizes technical capabilities such as the following: 

• Cyber Security: Skills to protect digital assets through risk assessment, security protocols, and proactive defense against cyber threats. 
• User Experience (UX) Design: Involves journey mapping, pain point identification, prototype design, and human-centered storytelling to create intuitive financial products. 
• Data Analytics and Insights: The capability to gather, interpret, and ethically manage data to make informed decisions and tell compelling stories. 
• Digital Literacy: Encompasses exploring new digital tools, managing cognitive leaps between platforms, scanning for innovations, and deeply understanding client digital experiences and expectations. 
• Agile Project Methodologies and AI/Machine Learning: Reflect skills required for flexible, team-based work environments and integrating rapidly evolving AI technologies.
